A man said to Hudhayfah, "O Hudhayfah."
We complain to God about your companionship, Messenger of God.
You met him, but we did not; you saw him, but we did not.
So Hudhayfah said, while we were complaining to God.
Your faith in it even though you did not see it.
By God, you do not know, O my nephew.
If you had caught up with him, how would you have behaved?
Indeed, you saw us with the Messenger of Allah.
The night of the Trench was cold.
It was a dark, rainy night, and Abu Sufyan had arrived.
And his companions were at al-Arsah, and the Messenger of God said.
Is there a man who will go and learn for us the knowledge of the people?
Allah admitted him to Paradise, and none of us stood up.
Then he said, 'There is a man who goes and learns the people's knowledge for us.'
May Allah make him a companion of Abraham on the Day of Resurrection.
By God, none of us stood up.
So he said, "Let a man go and find out about the people for us."
May God make him my companion on the Day of Resurrection.
By God, not one of us stood up.
So Abu Bakr said, "O Messenger of God, send Hudhayfah."
The Messenger of God, may God bless him and grant him peace, said, "O Hudhayfah."
So I said, "I am at your service, O Messenger of God; may my father and my mother be sacrificed for you."
He said, "Are you going?" I said, "By God, I have no intention of killing."
But I fear that I will be taken captive. He said, "You will not be taken captive."
I said, "Command me as you wish, O Messenger of God."
He said, "Go until you enter among the backs of the people."
Enter among the Quraysh, then say, O assembly of Quraysh.
When the next day comes, people only want to say
Where are the Quraysh? Where are the leaders of the people? Where are the heads of the people?
They will send you forward, then you will reach the fighting, and the killing will be by you.
Then go to Qays and say, O people of Qays.
People only want, when morning comes, to say.
Where are the steeds of the horses? Where are the horsemen? Then they will bring you forward.
So you will join the fighting, and the killing will be by you.
So I set out and entered between the backs of the people.
So I began to warm myself with them on their fires.
And I began to relate that hadith which he had commanded me to relate.
When dawn arrived, Abu Sufyan stood up.
So he called upon al-Lat and al-Uzza and associated others with God.
Then he said, "Let every man look at his companion."
With me is a man from among them warming himself by the fire.
I leaped at him and seized his hand, fearing that he might take me.
I said, "Who are you?" He said, "I am so-and-so, son of so-and-so."
So I said it was preferable, and when morning drew near.
They shouted, "Where are the Quraysh? Where are the leaders of the people?"
They said, "Bring the one you brought to us yesterday."
Where are the sons of Kinanah? Where are the archers?
And they said, "Bring what you brought to us last night."
So they faltered, and God sent the wind upon them that night.
So I left them no building that I did not demolish, nor any vessel that I did not overturn.
I even saw Abu Sufyan leap onto his tied camel.
So he began to drag it, and he could not get up.
So I came to the Messenger of God, and began to tell him about Abu Sufyan.
Then he began to laugh until his molars showed.
And I began to look at his canine teeth.
