قالَ أَبُقراطُ إِستِدامَةُ الصُّحْبَةِ بِعَبِّ الماءِ ، وَيَتْرُكُ الإِمْتِلاءَ مِنَ الطَّعامِ وَالشَّرابِ

Hippocrates said that maintaining health involves drinking water and avoiding fullness from food and drink.

وَقالَ الإِقْلالُ مِنَ الضَّارِّ خَيْرٌ مِنَ الإِكْثارِ مِنَ النَّافِعِ

And he said, 'Reducing harmful things is better than increasing beneficial ones.'

قالَ الشَّهْرَسْتاني في كِتابِ المِلَلِ وَالنَّحَلِ

Al-Shahrastani said in 'Kitab al-Milal wa al-Nihal'.

أَبُقراطُ هٰذا واضِعُ الطِّبِّ

This Hippocrates is the founder of medicine.

قالَ بِفَضْلِهِ الأوائِلُ وَالأَواخِرُ

His virtue was acknowledged by the ancients and the moderns.

أَرْسَلَ إِلَيْهِ مَلِكٌ مِنْ مُلُوكِ اليُونانِ بِقَناطِيرَ مِنَ الذَّهَبِ حَتَّى يَسِيرَ إِلَيْهِ فَأَبى

A king from among the kings of Greece sent to him loads of gold so that he would come to him, but he refused.

وَكانَ لا يَأخُذُ على المُعالَجَةِ أَجْرًا مِنَ الفُقَرَاءِ وَأَوْساطِ النّاسِ

He would not accept a fee for treatment from the poor and middle-class people.

وَقَد شَرَطَ أَنْ يَأخُذَ مِنَ الأَغْنِياءِ أَحَدَ ثَلاثَةِ أَشْيَاءَ طَوْقًا أَوْ إِكْلِيلًا أَوْ سِوارًا مِنَ الذَّهَبِ

He stipulated that he would receive from the rich one of three things: a necklace, a crown, or a bracelet of gold.

وَقِيلَ لَهُ أَيُّ العَيْشِ خَيْرٌ

He was asked, 'What is the best state of living?'

قالَ الأَمْنُ مَعَ الفَقْرِ خَيْرٌ مِنَ الغِنَى مَعَ الخَوْفِ

He said, 'Security with poverty is better than wealth with fear.'

وَقالَ يُداوَى كُلُّ عَلِيلٍ بِعَقاقِيرِ أَرْضِهِ

And he said, 'Treat every sick person with the herbs of their land.'
