Turned Away at the Gate

وَرَوَى عَدِيُّ بْنُ حَاتِمٍ الطَّائِيُّ عَنْ رَسُولِ اللهِ قَالَ

Adi ibn Hatim al-Ta'i narrated from the Messenger of Allah who said:

يُؤْمَرُ بِفِئَامٍ أَيْ جَمَاعَاتٍ مِنَ النَّاسِ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ إِلَى الْجَنَّةِ

A group of people will be ordered on the Day of Resurrection to go to Paradise,

حَتَّى إِذَا دَنَوْا مِنْهَا وَاسْتَنْشَقُوا رَائِحَتَهَا وَنَظَرُوا إِلَى قُصُورِهَا وَإِلَى مَا أَعَدَّ اللهُ لِأَهْلِهَا فِيهَا

until they come close to it, inhale its fragrance, and see its palaces and what Allah has prepared for its inhabitants in it,

نُودُوا أَنِ اصْرِفُوهُمْ عَنْهَا فَإِنَّهُمْ لَا نَصِيبَ لَهُمْ فِيهَا

A voice called out: Turn them away from it, for they have no share in it.

فَيَرْجِعُونَ بِحَسْرَةٍ وَنَدَامَةٍ مَا رَجَعَ الْأَوَّلُونَ وَالْآخِرُونَ بِمِثْلِهَا

They will return with a regret and remorse the likes of which none of the first or last have ever experienced.

فَيَقُولُونَ رَبَّنَا لَوْ أَدْخَلْتَنَا النَّارَ قَبْلَ أَنْ تُرِيَنَا مَا أَرَيْتَنَا مِنْ ثَوَابِ مَا أَعْدَدْتَ لِأَوْلِيَائِكَ كَانَ أَهْوَنَ عَلَيْنَا

They will say: Our Lord, if You had put us into the Fire before showing us what You showed us of the reward You prepared for Your close ones, it would have been easier for us.

فَيَقُولُ اللهُ تَعَالَى ذَلِكَ مَا أَرَدْتُ بِكُمْ

Allah, the Almighty, will say: That is what I intended for you,

كُنْتُمْ إِذَا خَلَوْتُمْ بَارَزْتُمُونِي بِالْعَظَائِمِ

When you were alone, you would boldly commit great sins against Me,

وَإِذَا لَقِيتُمُ النَّاسَ لَقِيتُمُوهُمْ مُخْبِتِينَ

And when you met people, you met them humbly,

تُرَاءُونَ النَّاسَ بِأَعْمَالِكُمْ خِلَافَ مَا تُعْطُونِي مِنْ قُلُوبِكُمْ

You show off to people with your deeds contrary to what you give Me from your hearts,

هِبْتُمُ النَّاسَ وَلَمْ تَهَابُونِي

You feared people and did not fear Me,

وَأَجْلَلْتُمُ النَّاسَ وَلَمْ تُجِلُّونِي

You revered people and did not revere Me,

وَتَرَكْتُمْ لِلنَّاسِ وَلَمْ تَتْرُكُوا لِيَ

You gave up things for people and did not give up anything for Me,

يَعْنِي لِأَجْلِ النَّاسِ

Meaning for the sake of people.

فَالْيَوْمَ أُذِيقُكُمْ أَلِيمَ عِقَابِي مَعَ مَا حَرَمْتُكُمْ مِنْ جَزِيلِ ثَوَابِي

So today I will let you taste My painful punishment along with what I have deprived you of My generous reward.
