I heard al-Bara' ibn Azib, may Allah be pleased with them, narrating.
He said: The Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, put someone in charge of the foot soldiers on the day of Uhud.
There were fifty men.
So Abdullah ibn Jubayr said.
If you see the birds snatching us,
So do not leave this place until someone is sent to you.
And if you see that we have defeated the people and humbled them.
So do not leave until someone is sent to you; then they defeated them.
He said, "By God, I saw the women growing more agitated."
Indeed, their anklets were plainly visible, and their sashes were raised, lifting their garments,
Then the companions of Abdullah ibn Jubayr said.
The spoils — O people — the spoils,
Your companions have appeared; what are you waiting for?
Then Abdullah ibn Jubayr said:
Have you forgotten what the Messenger of God, may God bless him and grant him peace, told you?
They said, "By God, we will surely come to the people."
We will certainly take a share of the spoils.
When they came to them, their faces were turned away.
So they returned, fleeing in disorder.
And that was when the Messenger called to them from behind.
Only twelve men remained with the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him.
So they struck seventy of us.
And the Prophet, may God bless him and grant him peace, and his Companions
Some of the polytheists were struck on the Day of Badr.
Two hundred and ten prisoners.
And seventy were killed.
Then Abu Sufyan said, "Is Muhammad among the people?" three times.
Then the Prophet forbade them to answer him.
Then he said, "Is the son of Abu Quhafa among the people?" three times.
He then said three times, "Is Ibn al-Khattab among the people?"
Then he returned to his companions and said.
As for these, they were killed.
Umar could not restrain himself, so he said:
By God, you have lied, O enemy of God.
Truly, all those you counted were alive.
And there has remained for you what will trouble you.
He said, "A day like the day of Badr."
And war is fierce fighting.
You will find an example among the people.
I did not command it, nor did it displease me.
Then he began to chant 'Exalt Hubal.'
Exalt Hubal.
The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said, "Will you not answer him?"
They said, "O Messenger of God, what should we say?"
He said, "Say, Allah is Most High and Most Majestic."
He said, "Indeed, the goddess is for us and not for you."
Then the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said, "Will you not answer him?"
He said, "They said, O Messenger of Allah, what should we say?"
He said, "Say: Allah is our protector and you have no protectors."
