Prayer During Illness

عَنْ عُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عُتْبَةِ

From Ubaydullah son of Abdullah son of Utbah,

قَالَ دَخَلْتُ عَلَى عَائِشَةَ

He said, "I entered upon Aisha."

فَقُلْتُ أَلَا تُحَدِّثِينِي عَنْ مَرَضِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسِلْمِ

So I said, "Will you not tell me about the illness of the Messenger of God, may God bless him and grant him peace?"

قَالَتْ بَلَى

She said, 'Yes.'

ثَقُلَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ

The Prophet, may God bless him and grant him peace, became weak.

فَقَالَ أَصَلَّى النَّاسُ قُلْنَا لَا

He said, "Have the people prayed?" We said, "No."

هُمْ يَنْتَظِرُونَكَ قَالَ ضَعُوا لِي مَاءً فِي الْمِخْضَبِ

They are waiting for you. He said, "Put water for me in the basin."

قَالَتْ فَفَعَلْنَا فَاغْتَسَلَ فَذَهَبَ لِيَنُوءَ فَأُغْمِيَ عَلَيْهِ

She said, so we did; he washed, then he went to lie down, and he fainted.

ثُمَّ أَفَاقَ فَقَالَ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَصَلَّى النَّاسُ

Then he regained consciousness and said, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, "Have the people prayed?"

قُلْنَا لَا هُمْ يَنْتَظِرُونَكَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ

We said, "No; they are waiting for you, O Messenger of God."

قَالَ ضَعُوا لِيَّ مَاءً فِي الْمِخْضَبِ قَالَتْ فَقَعَدَ فَاغْتَسَلَ

He said, "Put water for me in the basin." She said; then he sat down and washed himself.

ثُمَّ ذَهَبَ لِيَنُوءَ فَأُغْمِيَ عَلَيْهِ

Then he went to lean over and fainted.

ثُمَّ أَفَاقَ فَقَالَ أَصَلَّى النَّاسُ قِلَّنَا لَا

Then he regained consciousness and asked, "Did the people pray?" We said, "No."

هُمْ يَنْتَظِرُونَكَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ فَقَالَ ضَعُوا لِيَّ مَاءً فِي الْمِخْضَبِ

They were waiting for you, O Messenger of Allah, so he said, "Put water for me in the basin."

فَقَعَدَ فَإِغْتَسَلَ ثُمَّ ذَهَبَ لِيَنُوءَ فَأُغْمِيَ عَلَيْهِ

He sat down, washed himself, went to lie down, and fainted.

ثُمَّ أَفَاقَ فَقَالَ أَصَلَّى النَّاسُ فَقُلْنَا لَا

Then he regained consciousness and asked, "Had the people prayed?" We said, "No."

هُمْ يَنْتَظِرُونَكَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ

They are waiting for you, O Messenger of Allah—

وَالنَّاسُ عُكُوفٌ فِي الْمَسْجِدِ يَنْتَظِرُونَ النَّبِيَّ عَلَيْهِ السَّلاَمُ

And the people remained in the mosque, waiting for the Prophet, peace be upon him.

لِصَلَاةِ الْعِشَاءِ الْآخِرَةِ

for the final night prayer.

فَأَرْسَلَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِلَى أَبِي بَكْرٍ بِأَنْ يُصَلِّيَ بِالنَّاسِ

So the Prophet, may God bless him and grant him peace, sent to Abu Bakr asking him to lead the people in prayer.

فَأَتَاهُ الرَّسُولُ فَقَالَ إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَأْمُرُكَ أَنْ تُصَلِّّيَ بِالنَّاسِ

A messenger came to him and said that the Messenger of Allah, may Allah's blessings and peace be upon him, commands you to lead the people in prayer.

فَقَالَ أَبُ بَكْرٍ وَكَانَ رَجُلًا رَقِيقًا يَا عُمَرُ صَلِّ بِالنَّاسِ

Abu Bakr, who was a gentle man, said, "O Umar, lead the people in prayer."

فَقَالَ لَهُ عُمَرُ أَنْتَ أَحَقُّ بِذَلِكَ فَصَلَّى أَبُو بَكْرٍ تِلْكَ الأَيَّامَ

Umar said to him, "You are more entitled to that," so Abu Bakr led the prayer during those days.

ثُمَّ إِنَّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَجَدَ مِنْ نَفْسِهِ خِفَّةً فَخَرَجَ بَيْنَ رَجُلَيْنِ

Then the Prophet, may God bless him and grant him peace, felt a lightness within his self, so he went out between two men.

أَحَدُهُمَا الْعَبَّاسُ لِصَلَاةِ الظُّهْرِ وَأَبِي بَكْرٍ يُصَلِّي بِالنَّاسِ

One of them, Al-Abbas, performed the noon prayer, and Abu Bakr led the people in prayer.

فَلَمَّا رَآهُ أَبُو بَكْرٍ ذَهَبَ لِيَتَأَخَّرَ

When Abu Bakr saw him, he stepped back to stand further behind.

فَأَوْمَأَ إِلَيْهِ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ بِأَنْ لاَ يَتَأَخَّرَ

Then the Prophet gestured to him not to delay.

قَالَ إِجْلِسْنِي إِلَى جَنْبِهِ فَأَجْلَسَاهُ إِلَى جَنْبِ أَبِ بَكْرٍ

He said, "Seat me beside him," so they seated him beside Abu Bakr.

قَالَ فَجَعَلَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ يُصَلِّي وَهُوَ يَأْتَمُّ بِصَلَاةِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ

He said: Abu Bakr then led the prayer while following the Prophet's prayer.

وَالنَّاسُ بِصَلَاةِ أَبِي بَكْرٍ وَالنَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَاعِدٌ

The people were praying behind Abu Bakr, and the Prophet, may God bless him and grant him peace, was sitting.

قَالَ عُبَيْدُ اللَّهِ فَدَخَلْتُ عَلَى عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَبَّاسٍ

Ubaydullah said, "I entered upon Abdullah ibn Abbas."

فَقُلْتُ لَهُ أَلاَ أَعْرِضُ عَلَيْكَ مَا حَدَّثَتْنِي عَائِشَةُ عَنْ مَرَضِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ

I said to him, "Shall I relate to you what Aisha told me about the Prophet's illness, may God bless him and grant him peace?"

قَالَ هَاتِ فَعَرَضْتُ عَلَيْهِ حَدِيثَهَا

He said, "Give it to me," and I presented her hadith to him.

فَمَا أَنْكَرَ مِنْهُ شَيْئًا

And he did not deny any of it,

غَيْرَ أَنَّهُ قَالَ أَسَمَّتْ لَكَ ٱلرَّجُلَ الَّذِي كَانَ مَعَ الْعَبَّاسِ

However, he said, 'Did she name for you the man who was with al‑Abbas?'

قُلْتُ لَا قَالَ هُوَ عَلِيٌّ

I said, "No." He said, "He is Ali."
