The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) and his companions set out until they reached Badr before the polytheists, and the polytheists came.
The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: 'None of you should advance towards anything until I am ahead of him.'
The polytheists approached.
The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: 'Rise to a paradise as vast as the heavens and the earth.'
Umayr bin Al-Humam Al-Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him) said: 'O Messenger of Allah, a paradise as vast as the heavens and the earth?'
He said: 'Yes.'
He said: 'How wonderful!'
The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: 'What makes you say 'How wonderful'?'
He said: 'Nothing, O Messenger of Allah, except that I hope to be among its people.' So he said: 'You are indeed among its people.' Then he took out dates from his quiver and began to eat them.
Then he said: 'If I live until I eat my dates, it will indeed be a long life!'
He threw away what dates he had with him,
and then he fought them until he was killed.
