A Mother's Forgiveness

عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ أَوْفَى

From Abdullah ibn Awf,

قَالَ جَاءَ رَجُلٌ إِلَى النَّبِيِّ

He said, "A man came to the Prophet,"

فَقَالَ يَا رَسُوْلَ اللَّهِ

He said, "O Messenger of God,"

هَهُنَا غلامٌ قَدْ أحتضر

Here is a boy who is dying.

يُقَالُ لَهُ

It is said to him.

قُلْ لَهُ لَا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ

Say to him, "There is no god but God."

فَلَا يَسْتَطِيعُ أَنْ يَقُولَهَا

So he cannot say it.

قَالَ أَلْيْسَ كَانَ يَقُولُهَا فِي حَيَاتِهِ

He said, "Didn't he use to say it in his lifetime?"

قَالُوا بَلَى

They said, "Yes."

قَالَ فَمَا يَمْنَعُهُ مِنْهَا عِنْدَ مَوْتِهِ

He said, "So what prevents him from it at his death?"

فَنَهَضَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ وَنَهَضْنَا مَعَهُ حَتَّى أَتَى الْغُلَامَ

The Messenger of God rose, and we rose with him until he came to the boy.

فَقَالَ يَا غُلَامُ

Then he said, O boy,

قُلْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ

Say, there is no god but God.

قَالَ لَا أَسْتَطِيعُ أَنْ أَقُولَهَا

He said, "I cannot say it."

قَالَ وَلَمْ ظْ

He said, "But why?"

قَالَ لِعُقُوقِي وَالِدَتِي

He said to Aqouqi, "My mother."

قَالَ أَحْيَةُ هِيَ

He said, "Is she Ahiya?"

قَالَ نِعْمًا

He said, "Excellent!"

قَالَ اِدْعُوهَا فَدَعَوْهَا

He said, "Call her." Then they called her.

فَقَالَ هَذَا اِبْنُكَ

Then he said, "Is this your son?"

قَالَتْ نِعْمَ

She said yes.

قَالَ أَرَأَيْتَ لَوْ أَنَّ نَارٌ أُجِّجَتْ

He said, "Have you considered if a fire were kindled?"

قِيلَ لَكَ إِنْ لَمْ تَشَفَّعِي لَهُ

You were told that if you do not intercede for him.

فَدَفَنَّاهُ فِي هَذِهِ النَّارِ

So we buried him in this fire.

قَالَتْ إِذًا كُنتُ أَشْفَعُ لَهُ

She said, "Then I was interceding for him."

قَالَ فَإِشْهَدِي اللَّهَ وَأَشْهِدِينَا أَنَّكَ قَدْ رَضِيتَ عَنْهُ

He said, "Then bear witness to God and to us that you have been pleased with him."

قَالَتْ اللَّهُمَّ أني أَشْهَدُكَ وَأَشْهَدُ رَسُولَكَ أني قَدْ رَضِيتُ عَنْ إِبْنِي

She said, "O Allah, I testify to You and to Your Messenger that I am satisfied with my son."

قَالَ يَا غُلاَمُ

He said, 'O boy,'

قُلْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ

Say, 'There is no god but Allah.'

فَقَالَ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ

So he said, "There is no god but Allah."

فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي أَنْقَذَهُ بِي مِنَ النار

So the Messenger of Allah said, "Praise be to Allah, who saved him through me from the Fire."
