لَقِيَنِي أَبُو بَكْرٍ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ فَقَالَ كَيْفَ أَنْتَ يَا حَنْظَلَةُ

Abu Bakr, may Allah be pleased with him, met me and said: 'How are you, Hanzala?'

قُلْتُ نَافَقَ حَنْظَلَةُ

I said: 'Hanzala has become a hypocrite?'

قَالَ سُبْحَانَ اللهِ مَا تَقُولُ

He said: 'Glory be to Allah, what are you saying?'

قُلْتُ نَكُونُ عِنْدَ رَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يُذَكِّرُنَا بِالْجَنَّةِ وَالنَّارِ كَأَنَّا رَأْيَ عَيْنٍ

I said: 'When we are with the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, he reminds us of Paradise and Hell as if we see them with our own eyes.'

فَإِذَا خَرَجْنَا مِنْ عِنْدِ رَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَافَسْنَا الْأَزْوَاجَ وَالْأَوْلَادَ وَالضَّيْعَاتِ نَسِينَا كَثِيرًا

But when we leave the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, we get involved with our wives, children, and livelihood and forget much.

قَالَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ فَوَاللهِ إِنَّا لَنَلْقَى مِثْلَ هَذَا

Abu Bakr, may Allah be pleased with him, said: 'By Allah, we experience the same.'

فَانْطَلَقْتُ أَنَا وَأَبُو بَكْرٍ حَتَّى دَخَلْنَا عَلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ

So I and Abu Bakr went until we entered upon the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him.

فَقُلْتُ نَافَقَ حَنْظَلَةُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَمَا ذَاكَ

I said: 'Hanzala has become a hypocrite, O Messenger of Allah!' So the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: 'And what is that?'

قُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ نَكُونُ عِنْدَكَ تُذَكِّرُنَا بِالنَّارِ وَالْجَنَّةِ كَأَنَّا رَأْيَ الْعَيْنِ

I said: 'O Messenger of Allah, when we are with you, you remind us of Hell and Paradise as if we see them with our own eyes.'

فَإِذَا خَرَجْنَا مِنْ عِنْدِكَ عَافَسْنَا الْأَزْوَاجَ وَالْأَوْلَادَ وَالضَّيْعَاتِ نَسِينَا كَثِيرًا

But when we leave your presence, we get involved with our wives, children, and livelihood and forget much.

فقال رسول الله والذي نفسي بيده لو تدومون على ما تكونون عندي وفي الذكر لصافحتكم الملائكة على فرشكم وفي طرقكم، ولكن يا حنظلة ساعة وساعة ثلاث مرات،

The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: 'By Him in Whose Hand my soul is, if you remained in the state that you are with me and in remembrance, the angels would shake hands with you in your beds and on your paths. But, O Hanzala, a time and a time.' He repeated this three times.
