The Prophet said, 'The lawful is clear, and the unlawful is clear, and between them are ambiguous matters that many people do not know.'
Whoever avoids the ambiguous matters clears himself regarding his religion and honor.
And whoever falls into the ambiguous matters falls into the unlawful.
Like a shepherd grazing around a sanctuary, he is likely to fall into it.
Indeed, every king has a protected sanctuary.
Indeed, the sanctuary of Allah is His prohibitions.
Indeed, in the body there is a piece of flesh that, if it is sound, the whole body is sound.
And if it becomes corrupt, the whole body becomes corrupt, and it is the heart.
And concerning Abu Huraira, he said, 'The heart is a king and the limbs are its soldiers.'
If the king is sound, the soldiers are sound, and if it is corrupt, the soldiers are corrupt.
Section: These inner actions — such as love of Allah, sincerity to Him, reliance upon Him, and contentment with Him, and the like — are all commanded for both the elite and the common people.
Abandoning them is not commendable in any situation, even if one's rank is elevated.
As for sadness, God did not command it, nor did His Messenger; rather, it has been prohibited in certain places.
And if the matter of religion relates to it, as in His saying in Al-Imran: 'Do not weaken and do not grieve, for you will be superior if you are believers.'
And His saying in An-Nahl: 'Do not grieve over them and do not be in distress from what they plot.'
And His saying in At-Tawbah when he said to his companion, 'Do not grieve, indeed God is with us.'
And His saying in Yunus, 'Do not let their words grieve you.'
And His saying in Al-Hadid: 'So that you do not despair over what has passed you by, nor rejoice over what He has given you.'
And there are many similar examples. That is because it neither brings benefit nor prevents harm, and there is no use in it; and what has no use in it, Allah does not command.
Yes, one does not sin for it if his sadness is not accompanied by something prohibited, as one grieves over calamities.
As the Prophet said, 'Indeed, Allah does not punish for the tear of the eye or the sadness of the heart, but He punishes for this — or shows mercy.'
And he pointed with his hand to his tongue and said, 'The eye sheds tears, and the heart grieves, but we do not say except what pleases the Lord.'
And from this is His saying in Surah Yusuf: 'So he turned away from them and said, "Oh, my grief over Yusuf!" And his eyes turned white from sadness, for he was suppressing it.'
