وَقَالَ الشَّافِعِيُّ عَلَيْكَ بِالزُّهْدِ فَالزُّهْدُ عَلَى الزَّاهِدِ أَحْسَنُ مِنَ الحُلَىٰ
Al‑Shāfiʿī, may Allah be pleased with him, said: "Hold to asceticism, for asceticism upon the ascetic is more beautiful than jewelry upon a young woman."
وَقَالَ الرَّبِيعُ رَحِمَهُ اللَّهُ تَعَالَىٰ قَالَ لِي الشَّافِعِيُّ يَا رَبِيعُ
And al‑Rabīʿ, may Allah have mercy on him, said: 'Al‑Shāfiʿī said to me, "O Rabīʿ..."'
فِيمَا لَا يَعْنِيكَ فَإِنَّكَ إِذَا تَكَلَّمْتَ بِالْكَلِمَةِ مَلَكَتْكَ وَلَمْ تَمْلِكْهَا
Do not speak about what does not concern you, for when you utter a word, it owns you and you do not own it.
وَقَالَ الْمَزْنِيُّ سَمِعْتُ الشَّافِعِيَّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ تَعَالَىٰ عَنْهُ يَقُولُ
And al‑Muzannī said, 'I heard al‑Shāfiʿī, may Allah be pleased with him, say:'
