How to say “own” in Arabic, with pronunciation and real example sentences from OpenArabic texts.
قَالَ عَيْنَيْك أفقؤهما أَو جَمِيع مَا تملك
He said, 'Your eyes, gouge them out, or everything you own.'
تَمْلِكُ — you own. Present-tense verb 'tamlik' = 'you own, possess'; 'you' is built in.
From: Luqman's Response to Injustice →وهذا كله لا مني بل مِن من ملك
And all of this is not from me, but from the One who possesses the kingdom.
مَلَكَ — possesses. A past-tense verb completing the relative clause begun by 'the one who', with its doer carried inside. The verb means to own or hold sovereignty, so the clause reads 'the one who possesses', the action that defines the unnamed owner.
From: Victory Belongs to God →فيما لا يعنيك فإنك إذا تكلمت بالكلمة ملكتك ولم تملكها
Do not speak about what does not concern you, for when you utter a word, it owns you and you do not own it.
مَلَكَتْكَ — it possessed you. Past-tense verb, 'it owned/seized', with a feminine ending agreeing with the feminine 'word' as subject, plus 'you' attached as object. So 'the word owned you'; gender agreement is marked on the verb and the 'you' is the speaker.
From: The Pilgrim's Conduct →فَإِنَّكَ إِذَا تَكَلَّمْتَ بِالْكَلِمَةِ مَلَكَتْكَ وَلَمْ تَمْلِكْهَا
For indeed, when you speak a word, it possesses you and you do not possess it.
مَلَكَتْكَ — it possessed you. A past-tense verb wearing a small feminine ending so it agrees with its doer, the spoken 'word', which is grammatically feminine in Arabic. A 'you' object is also tacked on, so one word states 'it took possession of you', with grammatical gender doing work English ignores.
From: Silence and Supplication →فَمَا مَلَكَ عُمَرُ نَفْسَهُ فَقَالَ
Umar could not restrain himself, so he said:
مَلَكَ — had control of. A past verb meaning 'held mastery over / controlled', negated by the 'not' before it, so 'did not control'. Its default shape carries a single male doer, named just after, reporting a failed act of self-restraint.
