Silence and Supplication

وَقَالَ الشَّافِعِيُّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ تَعَالَى عَنْهُ

And al-Shafi'i, may Allah be pleased with him, said.

عَلَيْكَ بِ الزُّهْدِ

You should embrace asceticism.

فَالزُّهْدُ عَلَى الزَّاهِدِ أَحْسَنُ مِنَ الْحُلَى عَلَى النَّاهِدِ

So asceticism on the ascetic is better than adornment on the one who displays herself.

وَقَالَ الْرَّبِيعُ رَحِمَهُ اللَّهُ تَعَالَى

And al-Rabi', may Allah have mercy on him, said.

قَالَ لِيَّ الشَّافِعِيُّ يَا رَبِيعُ

Al-Shafi'i said to me, 'O Rabi'.

فِيمَا لَا يَعْنِيكَ

About matters that do not concern you.

فَإِنَّكَ إِذَا تَكَلَّمْتَ بِالْكَلِمَةِ مَلَكَتْكَ وَلَمْ تَمْلِكْهَا

For indeed, when you speak a word, it possesses you and you do not possess it.

وَقَالَ الْمُزْنِيُّ

And al-Muzni said.

سَمِعْتُ الشَّافِعِيَّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ تَعَالَى عَنْهُ يَقُولُ

I heard al-Shafi'i, may Allah be pleased with him, say.

لَيْسَ لِأَحَدٍ إِلَّا لَهُ مُحِبٌّ وَ مُبْغِضٌ

There is no one except that for him is an admirer and a hater.

فَإِذَا لَا بُدَّ مِنْ ذَلِكَ

If that is unavoidable.

فَلْيَكُنْ الْمَرْءُ مَعَ أَهْلِ طَاعَةِ اللَّهِ

Then let a person be among the people who obey Allah.

وَرُوِيَ عَنْ الْحَسَنِ بْنِ عُمْرَانَ بْنِ عُيَيْنَةِ

It was narrated to us from al-Hasan ibn Imran ibn Uyaynah.

أَنَّ سُفْيَانَ بْنَ عِيَيْنَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ تَعَالَى عَنْهُ قَالَ لَهُ

That Sufyan ibn Uyaynah, may Allah be pleased with him, said to him.

بِالْمُزْدَلِفَةِ فِي آخِرِ حَجَّةٍ حَجَّها

In al-Muzdalifah, at the end of the pilgrimage that he performed.

قَدْ وَافَيْتُ هَذَا الْمَوْضِعَ سَبْعِينَ مَرَّةً

I have come to this spot seventy times.

أَقُولُ فِي كُلِّ مَرَّةٍ

Each time I say,

اللَّهُمَّ لَا تَجْعَلْهُ آخِرَ العَهْدِ مِنْ هَذَا المَكَانِ

O Allah, do not make this my last visit to this place.

وَقَدْ اِسْتَحْيَيْتُ مِنَ اللَّهِ مِنَ كَثْرَةِ مَا أَسْأَلُهُ

And indeed I felt ashamed before Allah because of how often I asked Him.

فَرَجَعَ فَتَوَفَّى فِي السَّنَةِ الدَّاخِلَةِ

He returned and then died the following year.
