How to say “to control” in Arabic, with pronunciation and real example sentences from OpenArabic texts.
فيما لا يعنيك فإنك إذا تكلمت بالكلمة ملكتك ولم تملكها
Do not speak about what does not concern you, for when you utter a word, it owns you and you do not own it.
تَمْلِكْهَا — you control it. Present-form verb, 'you own', in its clipped shape after the past-negation, with 'it' attached as object pointing back to the word. So 'you did not own it'; the jussive clipping is forced by the negation.
From: The Pilgrim's Conduct →فَإِنَّكَ إِذَا تَكَلَّمْتَ بِالْكَلِمَةِ مَلَكَتْكَ وَلَمْ تَمْلِكْهَا
For indeed, when you speak a word, it possesses you and you do not possess it.
تَمْلِكْهَا — you possess it. This present-tense verb has had its ending cut short because the preceding negation particle demands that shortened mood and flips the sense to a flat past 'did not'. A feminine 'it' object hangs off the end, pointing back to the word that was spoken.
