The Night of the Migration

فَصْلٌ لَمَّا بَايَعَ الرَّسُولُ أَهْلَ العَقَبَةِ أَمَرَ أَصْحَابَهُ بِالْهِجْرَةِ إِلَى الْمَدِينَةِ

When the Messenger pledged allegiance with the people of Aqabah, he instructed his companions to migrate to Medina.

فَعَلِمَتْ قُرَيْشٌ أَنَّ أَصْحَابَهُ قَدْ كَثُرُوا

Quraysh realized that his companions had increased in number.

وَأَنَّهُمْ سَيَمْنَعُونَهُ

And that they would protect him.

فَأَعْلَمَتْ آرَاءَها فِي اسْتِخْرَاجِ الحِيَلِ

So they put their minds together to devise schemes.

فَمِنْهُمْ مَنْ رَأَى الحَبْسَ

Some of them proposed imprisonment.

وَمِنْهُمْ مَنْ رَأَى النَّفْيَ

And some of them suggested exile.

ثُمَّ اجْتَمَعَ رَأْيُهُمْ عَلَى القَتْلِ

Then they agreed upon murder.

فَجَاءَ البَرِيدُ بِالخَبَرِ مِنَ السَّمَاءِ

Then the messenger brought news from the heavens.

وَأَمَرَهُ أَنْ يُفَارِقَ الْمَضْجَعَ

And he was instructed to leave the bed.

فَبَاتَ عَلِيٌّ مَكَانَهُ

So Ali stayed in his place.

وَنَهَضَ الصِّدِّيقُ لِرِفْقَةِ السَّفَرِ

And the Truthful One rose to be his travel companion.

فَلَمَّا فَارَقَا بُيُوتَ مَكَّةَ اشْتَدَّ الحَذَرُ بِالصِّدِّيقِ

When they left the houses of Mecca, caution intensified for the Truthful One.

فَجَعَلَ يَذْكُرُ الرَّصْدَ فَيَسِيرُ أَمَامَهُ

He kept remembering the watch so he walked ahead of him.

وَتَارَةً يَذْكُرُ الطَّلَبَ فَيَتَأَخَّرُ وَرَاءَهُ

And at times, he would remember the pursuit, so he fell behind him.

وَتَارَةً عَنْ يَمِينِهِ

And at times, to his right.

وَتَارَةً عَنْ شِمَالِهِ

And at times, to his left.

إِلَى أَنْ انْتَهَيَا إِلَى الْغَارِ

Until they reached the cave.

فَبَدَأَ الصدّيق بِدُخُولِهِ ليَكُون وقاية لَهُ إِن كَانَ ثَمَّ موذ

So the Truthful One began to enter it to be a protection for him if there was any harm.

وَأَنْبَتَ اللَّهُ شَجَرَةً لَمْ تَكُنْ قَبْلُ

And Allah caused a tree to grow that had not been there before.

فَأَظْلَمَتْ الْمَطْلُوبَ وَأَضَلَّتْ الطَّالِبَ

So it darkened the sought one and led the pursuer astray.

وَجَاءَتْ عَنْكَبُوتٌ فَحَازَتْ وَجْهَ الْغَارِ

And a spider came and covered the mouth of the cave.

فَحَاكَتْ ثَوْبَ نَسْجِهَا عَلَى مَنُوَالِ السُّتْرِ

And it wove its web as a covering curtain.

فَأَحْكَمَتِ الشَّقَّةَ حَتَّى عَمِيَ عَلَى الْقَائِفِ الْمَطْلَبُ

So the web sealed the crack until it blinded the tracker from the search.

وَأرْسل حَمَامَتَيْنِ فاتخذتا هُنَاكَ عشا جعل على أبصار الطالبين غشاوة

And He sent two doves that made a nest there, creating a veil over the seekers' eyes.

وَهَذَا أبلغ فِي الإعجاز من مقاومة الْقَوْم بالجنود

And this is a greater miracle than resisting the people with armies.

فَلَمَّا وَقَفَ الْقَوْمُ عَلَى رُؤُوسِهِمْ

When the people stood over them.

وَصَارَ كَلَامُهُم بِسَمْعِ الرَّسُولِ وَالصِّدِّيقِ

And their words reached the ears of the Messenger and the Truthful One.

قَالَ الصِّدِّيقُ وَقَدِ اشْتَدَّ بِهِ الْقَلَقُ

The Truthful One, overwhelmed with anxiety, said.

يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ لَوْ أَنَّ أَحَدَهُمْ نَظَرَ إِلَى مَا تَحْتَ قَدَمَيْهِ لَأَبْصَرَنَا تَحْتَ قَدَمَيْهِ

O Messenger of Allah, if one of them were to look beneath his feet, he would see us.

فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ يَا أَبَا بَكْرٍ مَا ظَنُّكَ بِاثْنَيْنِ اللَّهُ ثَالِثُهُمَا

The Messenger of Allah said, 'O Abu Bakr, what do you think of two with whom Allah is the third?'

لَمَّا رَأَى الرَّسُولُ حُزْنَهُ قَدْ اشْتَدَّ

When the Messenger saw that his sorrow had intensified.

لَكِنْ عَلَى نَفْسِهِ قَوِيَ قَلْبُهُ بِبِشَارَةٍ لَا تَحْزَنْ إِنَّ اللَّهَ مَعَنَا

But in himself, his heart was strengthened by the glad tidings, 'Do not grieve; indeed, Allah is with us.'
