Three States of the Heart

بَاعِثُ الدِّينِ بِالإِضَافَةِ إِلَى بَاعِثِ الهَوَى لَهُ ثَلَاثَةُ أَحْوَالٍ

The motive of religion, together with the motive of desire, has three states.

إِحْدَاهَا أَنْ يَكُونَ الْقَهْرُ وَالْغَلْبَةُ لِدَاعِيِّ الدَّيْنِ

One of them is that coercion and dominance belong to the advocate of religion.

فَيَرُدُّ جَيْشُ الْهَوَى مَغْلُولًا

Then the army of desire is driven back, bound.

وَهَذَا إِنَّمَا يَصِلُ إِلَيْهِ بِدَوَامِ الصَّبْرِ

And this is attained only through constant patience.

الْوَاصِلُونَ إِلَى هَذِهِ الرُّتْبَةِ هُمْ الْمَنْصُورُونَ فِي الدُّنْيَا وَالآخِرَةِ

Those who reach this rank are granted victory in this world and in the Hereafter.

وَهُمْ الَّذِينَ قَالُوا رَبَّنَا اللَّهُ ثُمَّ استقاموا

And they are those who said, "Our Lord is God," and then remained steadfast.

وَهَمِّ الَّذِينَ تَقَوُّلٌ لِهَمِّ الْمَلَائِكَةِ عِنْدَ الْمَوْتِ أَلَا تَخَافُوا وَلَا تَحْزَنُوا

They are the ones to whom the angels say at the time of death, Do not fear and do not grieve.

وَأَبْشِرُوا بِالْجَنَّةِ الَّتِي كُنتُمْ تُوَعَدُونَ

Give glad tidings of the Paradise that you were promised.

نَحْنُ أَوْلِيَاءُكُمْ فِي الْحَيَاةِ الدُّنْيَا وَفِي الْآخِرَةِ

We are your protectors in this worldly life and in the Hereafter.

وَهُمْ الَّذِينَ نَالُوا مَعِيَّةَ اللَّهِ مَعَ الصَّابِرِينَ

And they are those who attained God's companionship with the steadfast.

وَهَمِّ الَّذِينَ جَاهَدُوا فِي اللَّهِ حَقٌّ جِهَادُهُ

And they are those who strove in Allah with the true striving due to Him.

وَخَصَّهُمْ بِهِدَايَتِهِ دُونَ مَنْ عَدَاهُمْ

And He singled them out for His guidance, excluding whoever was other than them.

الْحَالَةُ الثَّانِيَةُ ان تَكُونَ الْقُوَّةُ و الْغَلَبَةُ لِدَاعِيِ الْهَوَى

The second case is that power and dominance are with the instigator of desire.

فَيَسْقُطُ مُنَازِعُهُ بَاعِثٍ الدَّيْنِ بِالْكُلِّيَّةِ

Then his contender, the instigator of religion, collapses completely.

فيستسلم الْبَائِسُ لِلشَّيْطَانِ وَجُنْدِهِ

So the wretched man surrenders to Satan and his troops.

فَيَقُودُونَهُ حَيْثُ شَاءُوا

So they lead him wherever they please.

وَلَهُ مَعَهُمْ حَالَتَانِ

And for him, with them, are two situations.

إِحْدَاهُمَا ان يَكُونَ مِنْ جُنْدِهِمْ وَأَتْبَاعِهِمْ

One of the two is that he be among their troops and their followers.

وَهَذِهِ حَالُ الْعَاجِزِ الضَّعِيفِ

And this is the state of the helpless and the weak.

الْثَّانِيَةُ اَنْ يَصِيرَ الشَّيْطَانُ مِنْ جُنُودِهِ

The second is that he becomes one of Satan's soldiers.

وَهَذِهِ حَالُ الْفَاجِرِ الْقَوِيِّ الْمُتَسَلِّطِ وَالْمُبْتَدِعِ الدَّاعِيَةِ الْمَتْبُوعِ

And this is the state of the wicked, powerful, overbearing innovator and preacher who is followed by others.

كَمَا قَالَ القَائِلُ وَ كُنتُ امْرَأً مِنْ جُنْدِ إِبْلِيسِ

As the speaker said, I was one of Iblis's troops.

فَارْتَقَى بِي الْحَالَ حَتَّى صَارَ إِبْلِيسُ مِنْ جُنْدِيَّ

My condition rose so high that Iblis became one of my soldiers.

فَيَصِيرُ إِبْلِيسُ وَجُنْدُهُ مِنْ أَعْوَانِهِ وَأَتْبَاعِهِ

Then Iblis and his forces become among his helpers and followers.

وَهَؤُلاءِ هُمْ الَّذِينَ غَلَبَتْ عَلَيْهِمْ شَقْوَتُهُمْ

And these are the people whose misery overcame them.

وَاشْتَرَوْا الْحَيَاةَ الدُّنْيَا بِالْآخِرَةِ

And they exchanged the life of this world for the Hereafter.

وَإِنَّمَا صَارُوا إِلَى هَذِهِ الْحَالِ لَمَّا أَفْلَسُوا مِنَ الصَّبْرِ

And they came to this state only because they had run out of patience.

وَهَذِهِ الْحَالَةَ هِيَ حَالَةِ جَهْدِ الْبَلَاءَ

And this condition is a state of severe affliction.

وَدُرِكَ الشَّقَاءُ وَسُوءُ الْقَضَاءِ وَشَمَاتَةُ الْأَعْدَاءِ

And being overtaken by misery, an adverse decree, and the gloating of enemies.

وَجُنْدٌ أَصْحَابُهَا الْمَكْرُ وَالْخِدَاعُ

And the forces of its companions are guile and deception.

وَالْأَمَانِيِ الْبَاطِلَةِ وَالْغُرُورِ وَالتَسْوِيفِ بِالْعَمَلِ

False hopes, self-deception, and delaying action.

وَطُولُ الْأَمَلِ وَإِيثَارُ الْعَاجِلِ عَلَى الْآجِلِ

Lengthy hopes and preferring the immediate over the later.

وَهِيَ الَّتِي قَالَ فِي صَاحِبِهَا النَّبِيُّ

And this is what the Prophet said about the person who has it.

الْعَاجِزُ مَنْ أَتَّبَعَ نَفْسَهُ هَوَاهَا وَتَمَنَّى عَلَى اللَّهِ الأَمَانِيَ

The helpless one is the one who follows his own self its desire and wishes on Allah the wishes.

وأصحاب هَذِهِ الْحَالَ أَنْوَاعٌ شَتَّى

And the people in this state are of many different kinds.

فَمِنْهُمْ الْمَحَارِبِ لِلَّهِ وَرَسُولِهِ

Among them is the one who fights against Allah and His Messenger.

السَّاعِيُ فِي إِبْطَالِ مَا جَاءَ بِهِ الرَّسُولُ

One who seeks to nullify what the Messenger brought.

يَصُدُّ عَنْ سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ وَيَبْغِيهَا جُهْدُهُ عَوْجًا وَتَحْرِيفًا

He turns people away from the way of God and, by his effort, seeks to bend and distort it.

لِيَصُدَّ النَّاسَ عَنْهَا

to turn people away from it

وَمِنْهُمْ الْمُعْرِضُ عَمَّا جَاءَ بِهِ الرَّسُولُ

And among them is the one who turns away from what the Messenger brought.

الْمُقْبِلُ عَلَى دُنْيَاهِ وَشَهَوَاتِهَا فَقَطَّ

The one who is intent only on his worldly life and its desires.

وَمِنْهُمْ الْمُنَافِقُ ذُو الْوَجْهَيْنِ

And among them is the two-faced hypocrite.

الذِّي يَأْكُلُ بِالْكُفْرِ وَالإِسْلَامِ

One who lives by both disbelief and Islam.

وَمِنْهُمْ الْمَاجِنُ الْمُتَلَاعِبُ

And among them is the licentious man who amuses himself.

الَّذِي قَطَعَ أَنْفَاسَهُ بِالْمُجُونِ وَاللَّهْوِ وَالْأَلْعَابِ

who cut short his life through debauchery, amusement, and games
