How to say “be called” in Arabic, with pronunciation and an example from OpenArabic texts.
وَلِذَلِكَ كَانَتْ تُسَمَّى ذَاتَ النِّطَاقِ،
And for that reason she was called She of the Girdle,
تُسَمَّى — be called. This is the passive: she RECEIVES the naming rather than naming anyone, and Arabic marks that with inner-vowel shaping, not a helper like 'was'. Paired with the 'she was' before it, it reads 'used to be called', the namers left unstated, people in general.
