Arabic vocabulary
How to say “long” in Arabic, with pronunciation and an example from OpenArabic texts.
فَرُفِعَتْ لَنَا صَخْرَةٌ طَوْيِلَةٌ،
Then a long rock was raised for us.
طَوْيِلَةٌ — long. A feminine adjective describing the rock, agreeing with it in gender and in being indefinite, shown by its matching '-a' and '-un' tails. Arabic makes adjectives copy the gender and definiteness of their noun, so agreement is how you know which noun an adjective belongs to. It follows the noun rather than preceding it as in English.
