Desires multiplied among the people.
تَشَعَّبَتْ — it multiplied. A past-tense verb in a derived 'branch out/multiply' pattern, kept singular even though its subject (the desires) is plural and comes after it; Arabic regularly uses a singular verb before a following plural subject. It carries a feminine ending agreeing with that subject. It states the spreading action.
