How to say “nearer” in Arabic, with pronunciation and an example from OpenArabic texts.
فَإِلَى أَيِّهِمَا كَانَ أَدْنَىٰ فَهُوَ لَهُ
So whichever of the two he was nearer to, it belonged to him.
أَدْنَىٰ — nearer. This is a comparative describing word ('nearer'), built on a fixed pattern Arabic uses for 'more X'. It serves as the predicate completing the preceding 'was' verb, and that linking verb is why it takes the accusative tail ending rather than the plain subject form.
