How to say “Thawri” in Arabic, with pronunciation and an example from OpenArabic texts.
وَقَالَ سُفْيَانُ الثَّوْرِيُّ
And Sufyan al-Thawri said:
الثَّوْرِيُّ — al-Thawri. This is a relational adjective (a nisba) tying the man to a tribe or place, the equivalent of an English '-ite/-an' surname. It qualifies the preceding name and shares its case. Its al- here assimilates in sound to the following consonant, a sun-letter effect, so it is heard doubled rather than as a clear 'l'.
