Deeds for God Alone

وَإِذَا كَانَتْ جَمِيعُ الحَسَنَاتِ لَا بُدَّ فِيهَا مِنْ شَيْئَيْنِ

And if all good deeds must include two things:

أَنْ يُرَادَ بِهَا وَجْهُ اللهِ

That they are intended for the sake of Allah,

وَأَنْ تَكُونَ مُوَافِقَةً لِلشَّرِيعَةِ

And that they are in accordance with the Sharia,

فَهَذَا فِي الأَقْوَالِ وَالأَفْعَالِ

This applies to words and actions,

فِي الكَلِمِ الطَّيِّبِ وَالعَمَلِ الصَّالِحِ

In good speech and righteous acts,

فِي الأُمُورِ العِلْمِيَّةِ وَالأُمُورِ العِبَادِيَّةِ

In matters of knowledge and devotional acts,

وَلِهَذَا ثَبَتَ فِي الصَّحِيحِ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ

And this is why it was affirmed in the authentic narration from the Prophet ﷺ:

أن أول ثلاثة تسجر بهم جهنم

"The first three for whom Hell will be kindled are:

رَجُلٌ تَعَلَّمَ العِلْمَ وَعَلَّمَهُ وَقَرَأَ القُرْآنَ وَأَقْرَأَهُ لِيَقُولَ النَّاسُ هُوَ عَالِمٌ وَقَارِئٌ

A man who learned knowledge, taught it, and recited the Quran, but did so for people's praise, saying: He is a scholar and a reciter,

وَرَجُلٌ قَاتَلَ وَجَاهَدَ لِيَقُولَ النَّاسُ هُوَ شُجَاعٌ وَجَرِيءٌ

And a man who fought and struggled for people to say: He is brave and bold,

وَرَجُلٌ تَصَدَّقَ وَأَعْطَى لِيَقُولَ النَّاسُ جَوَادٌ سَخِيٌّ

And a man who gave charity and donated for people to say: He is generous and charitable,"

فَإِنَّ هَؤُلَاءِ الثَّلَاثَةَ الَّذِينَ يُرِيدُونَ الرِّيَاءَ وَالسُّمْعَةَ هُمْ بِإِزَاءِ الثَّلَاثَةِ الَّذِينَ بَعْدَ النَّبِيِّينَ مِنَ الصِّدِّيقِينَ وَالشُّهَدَاءِ وَالصَّالِحِينَ

For these three who seek show and reputation are the counterparts of the three who come after the prophets: the truthful, the martyrs, and the righteous.

فَإِنَّ مَن تَعَلَّمَ العِلْمَ الَّذِي بَعَثَ اللهُ بِهِ رُسُلَهُ وَعَلَّمَهُ لِوَجْهِ اللهِ كَانَ صِدِّيقًا

For whoever learns the knowledge sent by God through His messengers and teaches it for the sake of God is a sincere one,

وَمَن قَاتَلَ لِتَكُونَ كَلِمَةُ اللهِ هِيَ العُلْيَا وَقُتِلَ كَانَ شَهِيدًا

And whoever fights so that the word of God is supreme and is killed is a martyr,

وَمَن تَصَدَّقَ يَبْتَغِي بِذَٰلِكَ وَجْهَ اللهِ كَانَ صَالِحًا

And whoever gives charity seeking thereby the pleasure of God is righteous.
