Sincerity and Hypocrisy

وَ قَدْ رَوَاهُ البُخَارِيُّ فِي صَحِيحِهِ عَنْ عُمَرَ بْنِ الْخَطَّابِ

Al-Bukhari narrated it in his Sahih from Umar ibn al-Khattab.

أَنَّ رَجُلًا كَانَ يُسَمَّى حِمَارًا

A man was called "Himar" (Donkey).

وَ كَانَ يُضْحِكُ النَّبِيَّ

And he used to make the Prophet laugh.

وَ كَانَ يَشْرَبُ الخَمْرَ وَ يَجْلِدُهُ النَّبِيُّ

And he used to drink alcohol, and the Prophet would lash him.

فَ أُتِيَ بِهِ مَرَّةً

Then he was brought to him once.

فَ قَالَ رَجُلٌ لَعَنَهُ اللهُ مَا أَكْثَرَ مَا يُؤْتَى بِهِ إِلَى النَّبِيِّ

So a man said, 'May Allah curse him; how often he is brought to the Prophet!'

فَ قَالَ النَّبِيُّ لَا تَلْعَنْهُ فَإِنَّهُ يُحِبُّ اللَّهَ وَ رَسُولَهُ

The Prophet said, 'Do not curse him, for he loves Allah and His Messenger.'

فَ هَذَا بَيِّنٌ أَنَّ المُذْنِبَ بِالشَّرَابِ وَ غَيْرِهِ قَدْ يَكُونُ مُحِبًّا لِلَّهِ وَ رَسُولِهِ

This shows that a sinner through drinking and otherwise can still love Allah and His Messenger.

وَحب الله رَسُوله أوثق عرى الْإِيمَان

And the love of Allah and His Messenger is the strongest bond of faith.

كَمَا أَنَّ العَابِدَ الزَّاهِدَ قَدْ يَكُونُ لِمَا فِي قَلْبِهِ مِن بِدْعَةٍ وَ نِفَاقٍ مَسْخُوطًا عِنْدَ اللَّهِ وَ رَسُولِهِ

Just as a devout worshipper may, because of the innovation and hypocrisy in his heart, be disliked by Allah and His Messenger.

مِنْ ذَلِكَ الوَجْهِ كَمَا اسْتَفَاضَ فِي الصِّحَاحِ وَ غَيْرِهَا

In this regard, as has been widely narrated in the Sahih collections and others.

مِنْ حَدِيثِ عَلِيٍّ بْنِ أَبِي طَالِبٍ وَ أَبِي سَعِيدٍ الْخُدْرِيِّ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ

From the hadith of Ali ibn Abi Talib and Abu Sa'id al-Khudri about the Prophet.

إِنَّهُ ذَكَرَ الْخَوَارِجَ فَقَالَ

He mentioned the Khawarij and said,

يَحْقِرُ أَحَدُكُمْ صَلَاتَهُ مَعَ صَلَاتِهِمْ

One of you would consider his prayer insignificant compared to their prayers.

وَ صِيَامِهِ مَعَ صِيَامِهِمْ

And his fasting compared to their fasting.

وقراءته مَعَ قارئتهم يقرءُون الْقُرْآن لَا يُجَاوز حَنَاجِرهمْ

And his recitation compared to their recitation; they recite the Quran, but it does not go beyond their throats.

يَمْرُقُونَ مِنَ الْإِسْلَامِ كَمَا يَمْرُقُ السَّهْمُ مِنَ الرَّمِيَّةِ

They exit from Islam as an arrow passes through its target.

أَيْنَمَا لَقِيتُمُوهُمْ فَ اقْتُلُوهُمْ

Wherever you encounter them, then kill them.

فَإِنَّ فِي قَتْلِهِمْ أَجْرًا عِنْدَ اللَّهِ لِمَنْ قَتَلَهُمْ

For indeed in killing them is a reward with Allah for whoever kills them.

لَئِنْ أَدْرَكْتُهُمْ لَأَقْتُلَنَّهُمْ قَتْلَ عَادٍ

If I were to encounter them, I would surely kill them like the killing of Aad.

وَ هَؤُلَاءِ أَصْحَابُ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ مَعَ أَمِيرِ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ عَلِيِّ بْنِ أَبِي طَالِبٍ بِأَمْرِ النَّبِيِّ

And these are the companions of the Messenger of Allah, with the Commander of the Faithful, Ali ibn Abi Talib, by the command of the Prophet.

وَ قَالَ النَّبِيُّ فِيهِمْ فِي الحَدِيثِ الصَّحِيحِ

And the Prophet said about them in the authentic hadith,

تَمْرُقُ مَارِقَةٌ عَلَى خَيْرِ فِرْقَةٍ مِنَ الْمُسْلِمِينَ يَقْتُلُهُم أَدْنَى الطَّائِفَتَيْنِ

A group will defect from the best faction of the Muslims, and the closer of the two parties will kill them.

وَلِهَذَا قَالَ أَئِمَّةُ الْمُسْلِمِينَ كَسُفْيَانَ الثَّوْرِيِّ أَنَّ الْبِدْعَةَ أَحَبُّ إِلَى إِبْلِيسَ مِنَ الْمَعْصِيَةِ

And this is why the leaders of the Muslims, like Sufyan al-Thawri, said that innovation is more beloved to Iblis than sin.
