أَنَّ عَبْدَ اللَّهِ بْنِعُمَرَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا قَالَ

Abdullah ibn Umar, may Allah be pleased with them both, said.

سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ

I heard the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, say

اِنْطَلَقَ ثَلَاثَةُ رَهْطٍ مِمَّنْ كَانَ قَبْلَكُمْ

Three men set out from among those who were before you.

حَتَّى آوْوُوا الْمَبِيتَ إِلَى غَارٍ فَدَخَلْوُهُ

Until they took shelter for the night in a cave and entered it.

فَانْحَدَرَتْ صَخْرَةٌ مِنَ الْجَبَلِ

Then a rock slid down from the mountain.

فَسَدَّتْ عَلَيْهِمْ الْغَارَ

Then the cave was sealed over them.

فَقَالُوا إِنَّهُ لَا يُنْجِيكُمْ مِنْ هَذِهِ الصَّخْرَةِ

They said, "He will not save you from this rock."

إِلَّا أَنْ تَدْعُوا اللَّهَ بِصَالِحِ أَعْمَالِكُمْ

Unless you call upon Allah with your righteous deeds.

فَقَالَ رَجُلٌ مِنْ هُمْ

Then one of them said.

اللَّهُمَّ كَانَ لِي أَبَوَانِ شَيْخَانِ كَبِيرَانِ

O Allah, I had two elderly parents.

وَكُنْتُ لاَ أَغْبِقُ قَبْلَهُمَا أَهْلاً وَلاَ مَالًا

And I would not leave them without household provisions or money.

فَنَأَى بِي فِي طَلَبِ شَيْءٍ يَوْمًا

Then he went away from me one day to look for something.

فَلَمْ أُرِحْ عَلَيْهِمَا حَتَّى نَامَا

So I did not let them rest until they both fell asleep.

فَحَلَبْتُ لَهُمَا غَبُوْقَهُمَا

So I milked for them their pail.

فَوَجَدْتُهُمَا نَائِمَيْنِ وَكَرِهْتُ أَنْ أَغْبِقَ قَبْلَهُمَا أَهْلاً أَوْ مَالًا

So I found them both sleeping, and I disliked to shut them out from family or from wealth.

فَلَبِثْتُ وَالْقَدَحُ عَلَى يْدَيَّ

So I remained, and the cup was upon my two hands.

أَنْتَظِرُ اِسْتِيقاظَهُمَا حَتَّى بَرَقَ الْفَجْرُ

I waited for their awakening until the dawn brightened.

فَاسْتَيْقَظَا فَشَرِبَا غَبُوقَهُمَا

Then they both woke up and drank their sips.

اللَّهُمَّ إِنْ كُنْتُ فَعَلْتُ ذَلِكَ ابْتِغَاءَ وَجْهِكَ

O Allah, if I did that seeking Your pleasure.

فَفَرِّجْ عَنَّا مَا نَحْنُ فِيهِ مِنْ هَذِهِ الصَّخْرَةِ

So relieve us from what we are in from this rock.

فَانْفَرَجَتْ شَيْئًا لَا يَسْتَطِيعُونَ الْخُرُوجَ

Then it opened something; they were not able to get out.

قَالَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ

The Prophet, may God bless him and grant him peace, said.

وَقَالَ الآخَرُ اللَّهُمَّ كَانَتْ لِيَّ بِنْتُ عَمٍّ كَانَتْ أَحْبَّ النَّاسِ إِلَيَّ

And the other said, "O Allah, I had a paternal cousin; she was the dearest of people to me."

فَأَرَدْتُهَا عَنْ نَفْسِهَا

So I made her change her mind.

فَٱمْتَنَعَتْ مِّنِّي حَتَّى أَلَمَّتْ بِهَا سَنَةٌ مِنَ السِّنِينَ

So she refused from me until a year of hardship befell her.

فَجَاءَتْنِي فَأَعْطَيْتُهَا عِشْرِينَ وَمِائَةَ دِينَارٍ

Then she came to me, so I gave her one hundred and twenty dinars.

عَلَى أَنْ تُخَلِّيَ بَيْنِي وَ بَيْنَ نَفْسِهَا

On condition that you leave between me and between her self.

فَفَعَلَتْ حَتَّى إِذَا قَدَرْتُ عَلَيْهَا

So she did until when I was able upon her.

قَالَتْ لَا أُحِلُّ لَكَ أَنْ تَفُضَّ الْخَاتَمَ إِلَّا بِحَقِّهِ

She said, "I do not permit for you to remove the ring except by his right."

فَتَحَرَّجْتُ مِنَ الْوُقُوعِ عَلَيْهَا

So I was ashamed to have sexual relations with her.

فَإِنْصَرَفْتُ عَنْهَا وَهِيَ أَحَبُّ النَّاسِ إِلَيَّ

So I turned away from her, although she was the person dearest to me.

وَتَرَكْتُ الذَّهَبَ الَّذِي أَعْطَيْتُهَا

And I left the gold that I had given to her,

اللَّهُمَّ إِنْ كُنْتُ فَعَلْتُ ذَلِكَ إِبْتِغَاءَ وَجْهِكَ

O Allah, if I have done that seeking Your face.

فَأَفْرِجْ عَنَّا مَا نَحْنُ فِيهِ

So relieve us of what we are in.

فَانْفَرَجَتْ الصَّخْرَةُ غَيْرُ أَنَّهُمْ لَا يَسْتَطِيعُونَ الْخُرُوجَ مِنْهَا

The rock split open, but they could not get out of it.

قَالَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ

The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said.

وَقَالَ الثَّالِثُ اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي اسْتَأْجَرْتُ أُجَرَّاءَ فَأَعْطَيْتُهُمْ أَجْرَهُمْ

And the third said, "O Allah, indeed I hired laborers and gave them their wages."

غَيْرُ رَجُلٍ وَاحِدٍ تَرَكَ الَّذِي لَهُ وَذَهَبَ

All but one man left what belonged to him and departed.

فَثَمَّرْتُ أَجْرَهُ حَتَّى كَثُرَتْ مِنْهُ الْأَمْوَالُ

So I let his wage grow until it multiplied into wealth.

فَجَاءَنِي بَعْدَ حِينٍ

After a while, he came to me.

فَقَالَ يَا عَبْدَ اللَّهِ أَدِّ إِلَيَّ أَجْرِي

He said, "O Abdullah, pay me my wages."

فَقُلْتُ لَهُ كُلُّ مَا تَرَى مِنْ أَجْرِكَ مِنَ الإِبِلِ وَالْبَقَرِ وَالْغَنَمِ وَالْرَّقِيقِ

So I said to him, "Take all that you see of your pay from the camels, the cattle, the sheep, and the slaves."

فَقَالَ يَا عَبْدَ اللَّهِ لَا تَسْتَهْزِئْ بِي

He said, "O Abdullah, do not mock me."

فَقُلْتُ إِنِّي لَا أَسْتَهْزِئُ بِكَ

So I said, "I am not mocking you."

فَأَخَذَهُ كُلُّهُ فَاسْتَاقَهُ

So he took it all and then drove it away.

فَلَمْ يَتْرُكْ مِنْهُ شَيْئًا

So he left nothing of it.

اللَّهُمَّ فَإِنْ كُنْتُ فَعَلْتُ ذَلِكَ ابْتِغَاءَ وَجْهِكَ

O Allah, so if I did that seeking Your pleasure.

فَافْرُجْ عَنَّا مَا نَحْنُ فِيهِ

So relieve us from what we are in it.

فَانْفَرَجَتْ الصَّخْرَةُ فَخَرَجُوا يَمْشُونَ

Then the rock split open, and they came out walking.
