Arabic vocabulary
How to say “Alas” in Arabic, with pronunciation and an example from OpenArabic texts.
قَالَتْ يَا وَيْلَتَا أَأَلِدُ وَأَنَا عَجُوزُ
She said, "Alas, will I give birth while I am old?"
وَيلتا — Alas. A fixed cry of woe; grammatically it is an exclamation rather than a content word, with the call-particle before it reinforcing the outburst. It carries emotion, not a piece of information.
