Arabic vocabulary
How to say “be arrogant” in Arabic, with pronunciation and real example sentences from OpenArabic texts.
ولا تستكبر ، ولا تكن ممن يستكبر بما علم ،
And do not be arrogant, and do not be among those who are arrogant about what they know,
تَسْتَكْبِرْ — be arrogant. This is a present-tense verb in the jussive shape, 'be arrogant', forced into that clipped ending by the prohibitive la before it: 'do not be arrogant'. Arabic forms a negative command by putting la with the verb cut to this jussive form; the 'you' is built in, addressing a single male.

يَسْتَكْبِرُ — are arrogant. This is a present-tense verb, 'he is arrogant', with its subject built in, inside the relative clause 'those who are arrogant'. The plain present ending shows it is a normal ongoing statement, not under any mood-changing particle; the doer is carried within the verb.
