How to say “dejected” in Arabic, with pronunciation and an example from OpenArabic texts.
قَالَ فَأَمْسَى كَئِيبًا حَزِينًا
He said, and by evening he became dejected and sad.
كَئِيبًا — dejected. An adjective in the object form (the '-an' tail), serving as the predicate of the 'became by evening' verb, telling the state he fell into. Arabic puts the predicate of such verbs into this case, which is why a describing word carries an object-like ending. It is the first of two such state-words.
