How to say “desolate land” in Arabic, with pronunciation and an example from OpenArabic texts.
وَقَدْ أَضَلَّهُ فِي أَرْضٍ فَلَاةٍ
And he had led him astray in a desolate land.
فَلَاةٍ — desolate land. This describing word follows its noun and agrees with it as indefinite and genitive, both shown by the doubled 'n' on its tail. It narrows the land to a barren, empty kind, the standard way Arabic tacks a quality onto a noun after naming it.
