How to say “enemies” in Arabic, with pronunciation and an example from OpenArabic texts.
وَسُلِّطَ عَلَى قَلْبِهِ أَرْبَعَةُ أَعْدَاءٍ
And four enemies were set upon his heart.
أَعدَاء — enemies. This is a 'broken' plural, where Arabic makes the plural by reshaping the inside of the singular rather than adding an ending. Standing right after the number 'four', it takes the 'of' (genitive) ending, the form Arabic uses for the noun that a number from three to ten counts.
