كُنَّا نَخَافُ أَنْ يَأْتِيَنَا،
We were afraid that he would come to us.
يَأْتِيَنَا — he would come to us. A present verb 'he comes' in its goal-shape ending after 'that', with a single 'us' object fused on the end; the ending marks the coming as the feared possibility. One word carries the male doer, the verb, and 'to us'.
