Arabic vocabulary
How to say “lit” in Arabic, with pronunciation and an example from OpenArabic texts.
فَإِذَا بِأُمِّي تُوَقِدُ تَنُّورًا لَنَا،
Then my mother lit an oven for us.
تُوَقِدُ — lit. A present-tense verb with the 'she' subject built into its prefix, describing what the mother was caught in the middle of doing. After the 'and there suddenly' frame, this ongoing present paints the scene as live action the narrator stumbles into, which is why English renders it as a past but it is grammatically a present picturing the moment.
