How to say “night” in Arabic, with pronunciation and an example from OpenArabic texts.
لَيْلَةُ الْخَنْدَقِ فِي لَيْلَةٍ بَارِدَةٍ
The night of the Trench was cold.
لَيْلَة — the night. This noun opens an 'X of Y' possessive pairing: it is the owned thing and 'the Trench' that follows is the owner. Even though English shows 'the' on it, in Arabic it carries no article of its own; its definiteness is borrowed from the named owner behind it. That borrowing is exactly why two bare nouns set side by side can mean 'the night of the Trench' with no separate word for 'of'.
