How to say “pass away” in Arabic, with pronunciation and an example from OpenArabic texts.
ثُمَّ لَمْ يَنْشَبْ وَرَقَةُ أَنْ تُوُفِّيَ،
Then it was not long before Waraqah died.
تُتَوَفَّى — he died. This is the passive cast into the subjunctive after 'an': Waraqah is TAKEN (in death) rather than doing anything, and Arabic marks both the passive (inner vowels) and the post-'an' mood (reshaped ending) on the one verb. The agent, God taking the soul, is left unspoken.
