Arabic vocabulary
How to say “self” in Arabic, with pronunciation and real example sentences from OpenArabic texts.
لا تُخاصِم نفسك بالضجيج، بل قُدها بالرفق الحازم
Do not contend with yourself with noise, but guide it with firm gentleness.
نَفْسَكَ — your soul. 'nafs' = 'self'; '-ka' = 'your', so 'your self'.
From: Small Daily Habits →فإذا هو قد أهلك نفسه
and so he has destroyed himself.
نَفْسَهُ — his self. This is the object of 'destroyed', and the -hu on its end means 'his', so 'his self', him. Because the doer and the one destroyed are the same person, this works reflexively, like English 'himself'; the noun stands in the object case.
From: Think Before You Act →وَقَالَ تَعَالَى وَالَّذِينَ لَا يَدْعُونَ مَعَ اللهِ إِلَهًا آخَرَ وَلَا يَقْتُلُونَ النَّفْسَ الَّتِي حَرَّمَ اللهُ إِلَّا بِالْحَقِّ وَلَا يَزْنُونَ
And the Exalted said: And those who do not call upon any other god with Allah, and do not take the life which Allah has forbidden except for a just cause, and do not commit adultery.
النَّفْسَ — the life. A noun with al- 'the', definite, 'the life/soul', the object of 'kill' in the accusative (object) form. Its definite al- and position after the verb mark it as the specific thing acted upon. It is then further specified by the relative clause 'which God forbade'.
