How to say “severe” in Arabic, with pronunciation and an example from OpenArabic texts.
مِنَ الْمَصَائِبِ الشَّدِيدَةِ وَالْبَلَايَا الْعَظِيمَةِ،
Among the severe calamities and the great afflictions,
الشَّدِيدَةِ — the severe. An adjective in the feminine singular, the form Arabic uses to agree with a non-human (here non-rational) plural; such plurals take feminine-singular description rather than plural. It also copies the definiteness and 'of' (genitive) ending of the calamities it modifies, which is how its grammar ties it to them.
