To test whether he finds contentment with them as his portion.
لِيَمْتَحِنَ — so that he may test. 'Li-' of purpose fused with a present-tense (form VIII) verb 'test / try' in the subjunctive (the '-a') — 'in order to test'. The 'li-' gives the aim: the gifts are a test.
