وَقَالُوا ﴿لَوْ شَاءَ الرَّحْمَٰنُ مَا عَبَدْنَاهُمْ﴾
And they said, "If the Most Merciful had willed, we would not have worshiped them."
الرَّحْمَٰنُ — the Most Merciful. This is a divine name, 'the Merciful', serving as the subject of 'willed' and taking the nominative ending. Named after the verb, it identifies whose will is supposed in the counterfactual, the agent of their hypothetical.
