الآيَةُ — verse. The noun carries the attached 'the', marking it as definite and specific. It is also the thing pointed at by the preceding 'this', and the two agree as a demonstrative and its noun, so together they mean 'this verse'.

الآيَةِ — of the verse. The owner half of the pairing, 'the verse', which the meaning belongs to. As the possessor it takes the genitive ending and keeps its own 'the'.

آيَةً — a verse. An indefinite noun 'a verse', standing as the object of 'recited'. Its object ending marks it as what receives the action, and its lack of 'the' leaves it general, 'some verse'. The ending, not position, fixes its object role.
