How to say “a stick” in Arabic, with pronunciation and an example from OpenArabic texts.
أَخَذَ عُودًا فَذَرَعَهُ بِذِرَاعِهِ
He took a stick, then he measured it against his arm.
عُودًا — a stick. An indefinite noun, a stick rather than the stick, marked as non-specific by its tail vowel-with-n sound. It is the thing taken, the receiver of the verb's action, so it takes the object case. The indefinite ending is what tells you it is being introduced fresh into the story.
