There was an exchange of words between me and my wife.
كَلاَمٌ — an exchange of words. An indefinite noun 'speech/words' that is the delayed doer of 'there was'; its plain subject ending and lack of 'al-' mark it as 'some exchange of words' that came into being. It is what the 'to be' verb asserts existed.
