ألم نَجعَلُ الأرضَ كِفاتا، أحياءً وأمواتا
Have We not made the earth a repository, for the living and the dead?
وَأَمْوَاتًا — and the dead. The 'and' joins the second member of the pair, keeping it in the same accusative as 'the living', since coordination carries the case along. So this noun stands level with the living, completing the container's contents as both the living and the dead.
