Nor did he avoid dining with people, nor delay in responding to an invitation to food,
يَتَأَخَّرُ — delay. This present-tense verb has its 'he' subject inside and, after the negator, denies an ongoing habit, 'he would not lag behind'. The plain present ending marks a general, repeated non-action.
