How to say “disputed” in Arabic, with pronunciation and an example from OpenArabic texts.
فاختصمت فيه ملائكة الرحمة وملائكة العذاب
Then the Angels of Mercy and the Angels of Punishment disputed over him.
فَاخْتَصَمَتْ — so they disputed. This is 'so' plus a Form VIII verb 'disputed / contended', and it is feminine-singular even though its doers (the angels) are plural — because Arabic treats a non-human plural as a feminine-singular group. So the '-at' ending is agreement, not a single female. Its subject follows.
