فوقعوا في حومة غفلة وفي ضيق شعر،
So they fell into the midst of heedlessness and into the narrowness of distress,
شَعَرٍ — distress. The owner half of the possessive pair, in the 'of' ending after 'narrowness of'. Its indefinite form keeps it general, 'of distress', and its position locks the two into a single possessive phrase.
