Opposite his house on the eastern side of the riverbank,
الشَّرْقِيِّ — eastern. A relational adjective 'eastern' modifying 'the side'. It agrees with its noun in definiteness (carrying al-), gender, and the genitive case. Such -i adjectives turn a direction into a describing word, here narrowing the location to the east bank.
