وَكُنْتُ أَسْأَلُهُ عَنْ الشَّرِّ مَخَافَةَ أَنْ يَدْرِكَنِي
And I used to ask him about evil, for fear that it might overtake me.
الشَّرِّ — the evil. A definite noun in the genitive shape set by the preposition before it. The 'al-' marks it as 'the evil', the known subject of the speaker's inquiry.
