وَكُنْتُ أَسْأَلُهُ عَنْ الشَّرِّ مَخَافَةَ أَنْ يَدْرِكَنِي
And I used to ask him about evil, for fear that it might overtake me.
مَخَافَةَ — for fear of. A verbal noun used to express cause, 'out of fear of', sitting in the accusative shape that Arabic uses for such reason-giving nouns. It explains why the asking was done.
