Arabic vocabulary
رِياضَةِ is how you say “exercise” in Arabic. Hear it pronounced and see it used in a real example sentence from classical texts below.
وَإِنَّمَا يَنْتَفِعُ بِالرِّياضَةِ وَالتَّأْدِيبِ مَنْ أَصْلُ جَوْهَرِهِ سَلِيمٌ،
And only benefits by exercise and discipline who his essential nature is sound,
بِالرِّياضَةِ — by exercise. The prefix bi- here marks the instrument or means, 'by way of', and forces the noun after it into the (genitive); the al- makes that noun definite. So it tells you THROUGH WHAT the benefiting comes. It is the first of a pair of means joined by the next word.
