So if you ask about the survivors, they are the fearful and cautious ones,
الخَائِفُونَ — the fearful ones. A definite plural describing-noun in the plain subject ending, serving as what is said about 'they'. It identifies the survivors as the fearful ones; its nominative ending marks it as the predicate completing the 'they are...' statement.
