خَالَفُوا فِيهِ الرُّسُلَ وَالْعُقُولَ اِتِّبَاعًا لِأَهْوَائِهِمْ
They opposed the messengers and sound reason in that, following their desires.
اِتِّباعًا — following. A verbal noun in the object-style ending used to express the reason or manner, 'out of following...', a 'why/how' adverbial. Arabic uses this ending to attach a cause-of-action like this. It heads the phrase explaining what drove their opposition.
