خَالَفُوا فِيهِ الرُّسُلَ وَالْعُقُولَ اِتِّبَاعًا لِأَهْوَائِهِمْ
They opposed the messengers and sound reason in that, following their desires.
اَلْرُّسُلُ — the messengers. A noun carrying 'the', a plural 'the messengers', in the object-style ending marking it as what they opposed. The definiteness fixes them as the known messengers. It is the first thing the opposing was aimed at.
